Syrian refugees protest against President Bashar al-Assad

We have all been impacted by the recent images and stories of Syrian refugees seeking safety beyond the borders of the country they call home. Sadly many have faced challenging and often heartbreaking circumstances: watching family members killed in front of them; witnessing the destruction of their homes; facing constant hunger and other painful events.

Once a parish or group of parishes or parish in collaboration with another faith community or community group – referred to as a Constituent Group, decides to form a refugee committee to sponsor a refugee family please contact your parish office for an application.  Send your completed application to Deacon Bob Britton at the Pastoral Centre.  Once received a date and time will be arranged with an expert in refugee sponsorship to meet and explain the process and have any questions answered. This will give the parish group a solid footing on which to move forward in their sponsorship. Thank you on behalf of the refugees and their families here (if they have any) for your commitment to help.

As they attempt to make their way to a new life the challenges do not end and in some cases some refugees paid the ultimate price by losing their life instead of making it to a place where they can build a new one. Many Canadian Catholics are asking: “How can we help?”

We help by taking action! Archbishop Anthony Mancini is challenging all our parishes to come together and commit as the parishes of the Archdiocese of Halifax-Yarmouth to sponsor 100 refugees from Syria!

As the Year of Mercy approaches we are called to be the face of mercy as Christ, our Brother, has poured out mercy on us. Now is our time to reach out to our brothers and sisters to help them in their need.

The reports about the current refugee crisis have had a worldwide effect. It is causing many people to ask: what can I do about it?

  • Pray – for families and children impacted by the violence in Syria.
  • Get Informed – read accounts of Syrian refugees in the media and online
  • Inform others – write articles to local newspapers, talk to family and friends about Syria
  • Donate – to organizations working to support Syrian refugees overseas and in Canada
  • Organize – bring together five people or more who want to help bring Syrian refugees to safety in Canada
  • Tuesday, September 29, 12:00-1:30pm, at ISANS, 6960 Mumford Road, available via live-stream
  • Tuesday, October 6, 6:30-8:30pm, at Paul O'Regan Hall, Halifax Central Library. 5440 Spring Garden Road

Our Archdiocese, through many of our parishes, has supported the sponsorship of refuges for many years.

For a parish group to begin a refugee’s sponsorship process it needs to:

  • Have the support of the pastor.
  • Form a group of at least five people who will lead the process, help raise the funds needed and help with the integration of the family into the community upon their arrival.
  • Contact Deacon Bob Britton in the Chancery office to learn the beginning steps of the process. He can be contacted at (902) 429-9800 ext. 307 or by email: . An information package on the sponsorship process can be found by clicking Sponsorship Information Package

May our faith be expressed in our actions!
